We’ve all been there. Your system feels a little sluggish, you try to save your work, and you get the dreaded warning that you’re low on hard drive space. You could buy a bigger hard drive but you know you’ve downloaded one too many digital menus, your download folder is a mess, and you really just need to clear out what you don’t need. Before you know it, you’re back in action, and your hard drive feels a lot lighter. All seems well until you try to open an important file…
This was exactly the issue one of our cloud storage clients faced, thanks toa storage challenged user. This client operates across multiple locations, and so they rely on CDS to provide a secure cloud data service, where their data is safely encrypted and stored on our external servers for use across their company.
One of their remote users suffering from a storage shortage thought they could free up some much-needed space on their laptop and began deleting files they didn’t personally need. What they didn’t realise was that they were directly deleting the company’s cloud data. The resulting effect? The cloud does what the cloud does best, it syncs, and so the files were deleted across the entire company.
Clients are in charge of their own data, and are free to delete files and folders just like they would on a local server, but while the deleting user didn’t need those files, they were still vital to the company, just not every day vital.
Enter CDS. We received a frantic call about the missing files. We investigated, quickly pinpointed both the time of deletion and the culprit. The real challenge came with the time taken to discover the files were missing. By that time, the simple recovery options were off the table.
The deletion has passed the data retention period by one day (just, one day!) and restoring from our usual cloud backup was no longer possible. Not to be outsmarted by a calendar, we got creative. We went after the problem with every feasible solution, until almost all of our options were exhausted. So we came up with a last-ditch plan: find a computer that hadn’t been turned on since the deletion and had avoided the sync.
And we found one, it didn’t contain everything but in combination with an earlier cloud restoration point we were able to restore the data to its pristine, pre-deletion state and no data was permanently lost.
With other cloud services, that data would be lost with no chance of recovery.
CDS offer superior cloud services up to any storage size, with hands-on support that ensures your business data is secure and accessible when you need it and with a 100% success rate for data recovery on our cloud systems, you’re protected from rogue deletions, accidental or otherwise.
As for the original space-saving user? We updated the permissions across the cloud system, so no one could play "accidental IT admin" again.
