Ten minutes before closing time, we received a call from one of our clients, a manufacturing firm that has now been with us for over 20 years.  The client had received a number of emails, in both her work and personal account, explaining that the password had expired. She clicked the link and tried resetting the password, but couldn’t be sure which account had been reset.

We knew the message could not have been from CDS, meaning she had been targeted by a phishing scam. An easy mistake to make, as phishing scams make up 50% of cyber crime. Quickly, we were able to confirm from our own systems that she had not shared the credentials of her work account, but we couldn’t say whether her personal account had been compromised.

Having built a relationship of trust, the client felt comfortable giving us access to her personal account. We take pride in our client-focussed approach and it is important to us that all of our clients are comfortable with their IT security. So while this account wasn’t our responsibility, we took ownership of the problem and began looking for solutions.  

We have a relationship with our clients, we know them well, and truly care about their wellbeing. What most people don’t know is that it is a common tactic used by phishing schemes to use personal accounts to gain access to work details, which could be used to commit fraud or compromise the security of the entire company. Eventually, this could have become a greater issue that fell within our contract so we choose to act sooner than later.

One of our engineers went through the process of resetting the password (including all the necessary two factor codes and security details). We were able to check for evidence of compromise and hand the account back to the client, safe in the knowledge that both email accounts were safe.
