A Word of Caution on Browser Extensions

A Word of Caution on Browser Extensions

A browser extension is a plug-in that adds functionality to your web browser. Most of us will have used at least one browser extension at some point - perhaps, for translating, checking spelling and grammar, or to block ads. Extensions are plug-ins that add functionality to your browser and can be really popular and useful productivity tools. However, it is important to download and use with caution and understand that, in some instances, they can be pose a risk to your data and systems.

This is why it’s essential to look through the access requirements before agreeing to install. Many require full access to read and change all your data on every website you visit. If a downloaded extension did contain malware (malicious software) it could be used to steal data, hijack systems and even empty bank accounts.

Stay Safe Using Browser Extensions

  1. Only download extensions from official sources, like Chrome Web Store, Firefox AddOns, or the Apple App Store. This won’t guarantee the extension is harmless but it will improve the chances of it being removed quickly if found to be malicious.

  1. Look for positive reviews of the extension from trusted tech sites, not just reviews from the site or web store. CDS don’t recommend the use of any browser extension unless it is required by a service provider that you trust.

  1. Consider the permissions being requested when installing and be mindful if it is requesting extensive access to your data or system. Don’t just click past installer boxes without reading what you are agreeing for the extension to have access to.

  1. Check your extensions list on each browser you use, regularly. Make sure that only extensions you recognise are on the list and that nothing has been downloaded in the background or changed later.

  1. The most important measure you can take is to ensure you have a good anti virus product working on each device you use, ensuring that if anything did slip through onto your device, it would be quarantined and you would be notified.
